X-ray Diffraction or XRD is used in chemical analysis of materials as it can give accurate and precise results. Analysis of chemicals is essential at it ensures the chemical’s safety, quality, productivity, control, consistency, among other factors. Almost everything we use or are likely to use undergoes a chemical analysis be it medicine, foods, detergents, cosmetics, toiletry and even clothes.X-ray diffraction analysis has therefore, become almost indispensable if you wish to use improved materials of desired quality throughout the manufacturing processes.

XRD is used to determine the crystal structure of a substance or material as it can characterise each individual chemical compound. This analysis method can help differentiate mixture, solid solution or complex compound formation and also can distinguish the relative amounts or quantity of the various compounds in any mixture. XRD is used for chemical analysis to find out if a substance has impurities and what effect those will have on the finished product.It gives a clear estimation of the purity of substances and this analysis goes a long way in developing products. 

X-ray diffraction can identify true and false hydrates as well as density. This method is also used to study whether the material is prone to unsuspected chemical reactions. To give an example, substances that are analysed for reactions are cheese and other dairy products. Cheese is analysed to see if any changes are taking place while it is ripening. X-ray diffraction is used so as to study the effect of aging and temperature on products so as to determine shelf life. These are all important for preparing and testing a product throughout the development process.

While XRD analysis is used to determine the crystallinity or non-crystallinity of a material in the solid state or in solution it is equally used to identify synthetic and naturally occurring materials. XRD can differentiate and recognise collodially dispersed phases and even determine the crystal sizein tiny microscopic ranges like those found in colloidal phases.XRD is used to analyse the purity of solutions and suspensions also because of this reason. Therefore XRD analysis helps in the process of developing pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, gels, etc.

Another area where X-ray diffraction is being used extensively is in the chemical analysis of soil and construction material like cement.  Sometimes mineralogical changes take place and so new compounds are formed when lime or cement are added. Chemical analysis is carried out to determine if these newly formed compounds have a beneficial or detrimental effect on the construction material.
Chemical analysis with XRD is being used extensively to determine the quantity of clinker minerals as well as cement and to analyse compounds like Free lime which is otherwise difficult to analyse by other methods.

Chemical analysis is one of the most fundamental methods used for precise quantitative and quality analysis and to determine the chemical state. X-ray diffraction supports chemical analysis because the results obtained are most reliable and accurate.
